There's a lot of juggling beyond just having successful missions in order to have a successful campaign. There's no shame in going at the easiest difficulty (Rookie) to learn the game's mechanics and strategy layer.

It's more like an intense game of chess than a free-for-all shooter. Repeating what /u/Trooper_Sicks said, XCOM isn't like any of the other games you've listed, especially since it's turn-based. When you go to take a shot there will be a % chance of if you will hit, it's pretty easy to get into the mindset of for example "if I take 2 50% shots one will hit" but that's not true, think of it like flipping a coin twice, the outcome of the first flip doesn't effect the outcome of the second so you're equally likely to miss both shots The game is also quite unforgiving to beginners but if you stick with it you'll start to get the hang of it. The biggest thing that I wish I'd known at the start is that you don't have to use both actions on a character at once, you can switch to another and come back later to use the 2nd action of the turn, this gets important later so you don't over extend yourself and trigger enemies when you don't have many actions left on your team It's a turn based tactics/strategy game so nothing like the games you listed, you take turns with the ai to try and complete a level, each of your soldiers gets 2 actions each which can be used to move, shoot, reload and various skills they learn as they level up.
